C’est déjà la fin de l’été, et les feuilles des arbres commencent à changer de couleurs… C’est une rentrée occupée cette saison! Il me fait plaisir de vous partager mes diverses projet d’expositions qui sont en cours, et une qui ouvre très bientôt...

Tsi Iotnekahtentiónhatie (là où les eaux coulent) ouvre au Centre Yvonne L. Bombardier à Valcourt cette fin de semaine. Cette exposition individuelle présente de nouvelles œuvres créées au cours de l’été, y inclus une nouvelle installation dans ma série chants pour l’eau. Celle-ci met en valeur Kahrhionwah’kó:wa – aussi connu comme le Fleuve Saint-Laurent – créée avec la collaboration de Ionhiarò:roks McComber qui a composé le chant. Niawenkó:wa à mon équipe d’atelier qui a travaillé fort cet été pour produire l’oeuvre: Armando Cuspinera, Jess Teionshontahthe Beauvais, Jobena Pedonoquot, Sabina Gámez et Emilie Kvist. Il y a aussi de nouvelles impressions numériques (imprimées à Postimage par Dayna Danger). Cet ensemble de travail a été subventionné par la Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada et le Centre de recherche Milieux à l’Université Concordia. Il y aura une discussion modérée des 3 artistes qui exposent au Centre lors du vernissage à 14h, le dimanche 22 septembre.

Summer has flown by, and now the leaves are starting to change… It’s been a busy start to the new season! However, I’m happy to let you know of the various projects that are ongoing, as well as one that is opening very soon…

Tsi Iotnekahtentiónhatie (where the waters flow) opens this weekend at the Centre Yvonne L Bombardier. This solo exhibition showcases new work created over the summer, and features the latest installation in the water song series, Kahrhionwah’kó:wa – also known as the Saint Lawrence. This was created in collaboration with Ionhiarò:roks McComber who composed the song for the river. Niawenkó:wa to my studio team, who worked tirelessly to complete this on time: Armando Cuspinera, Jess Teionshontahthe Beauvais, Jobena Petonoquot, Sabina Gámez and Emilie Kvist. There are also new digital prints that are a part of the exhibition (printed at Postimage by Dayna Danger). This exhibition was produced through funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and with the support of the Milieux Institute at Concordia University). There will be a moderated discussion with the 3 artists who have exhibitions opening on Sunday, at 2pm.

Selected by curators, Dominique Roy, Adrien Landry & Donald Vézina, the other artists include: Anna Torma, Barbara Todd, Carole Simard-Laflamme, Caroline Monnet, Graeme Peterson, Guillaume Brisson-Darveau, Line Dufour, Meghan Price, Ruth Scheuing and Sarah Stevenson. The Canadian delegation’s participation in the Biennial was coordinated by Laurie Béland, director of the Biennale du lin de Port-Neuf. Je travaille aussi sur des projets d’art public ces temps-ci et je suis fière de vous partager cette annonce de la Ville de Montréal: mon projet a été sélectionné pour l’ouevre permanente au Centre Sanaaq, un nouveau centre culturel près du square Cabot. L’oeuvre est inspirée d’un chant de gorge chanté par les Inuuk Nina Segalowitz et sa fille Sierra Segalowitz-Clabaux. La date d’installation est prévue pour janvier 2025.

This solo exhibition is a part of the Cégep du Vieux Montréal’s “Semaine de la citoyenneté”. I will be giving an artist presentation (in French) at 3:30pm in the Maison Théâtre – open to the public! - before the opening at 5pm.

I have been working on public art projects alongside my studio practice and am happy to share that my proposal was selected for a permanent installation in the new cultural centre, Centre Sanaaq, located near Cabot Square, Montreal. It will be based on a throat song sung by Inuuk performers Nina Segalowitz and Sierra Segalowitz-Clabaux. Installation date is set for January 2025.

Une exposition muséale qui regroupe pour la première fois 40 ceintures wampum provenant des collections du Musée McCord-Stewart, du Musée Quai-Branly, Chartres et le Vatican. L’exposition inclut aussi des œuvres d’art contemporain de Nadia Myre, Michel Teharihulen Savard, Skawennati et moi-même – des artistes dont les pratiques sont influencées par la symbolique de cet objet mnémonique.

Maison des aînés à Mirabel

Mon premier projet d’art public, délestages et rencontres, a été installé dans le jardin de la Maison des aînés à Mirabel. Il consiste de 5 sculptures en bronze, un peu ludiques, inspirées par les objets accumulés et délaissés au cours d’une vie. Ceux-ci sont jumelés avec de la faune locale du forêt voisinant. J’espère que ces sculptures pourront susciter des conversations et souvenirs pour tous.tes qui y passeront dans le jardin.

An exhibition that for the first time, brings together 40 wampum belts from the McCord Stewart collection, Musée Quai-Branly, Chartres and the Vatican. Maison des aînés à Mirabel, QC

My first exterior permanent artwork, délestages et rencontres, was recently installed in the garden of the newly constructed seniors care facility, the MDA Mirabel in Mirabel, Quebec. This consists of 5 bronze sculptures inspired by objects that are accumulated and left behind during the course of a lifetime. Each sculpture integrates some of the local fauna from the adjacent woods as well, with the hope of engaging the interest of visitors to this outdoor space.

Ciels racines [root skies] is a garden composed of 13 women, artists, authors, friends, mothers and daughters who were invited by the artist Anne-Marie Proulx. In it, the notion of garden becomes a place of friendships, of transmission and of rooting, an opportunity for the sharing of times and spaces, of forms and ideas. Dans quelques jours, je participe à une conférence au Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal avec l’artiste / designer Ying Goa. Nous parlerons de nos œuvres respectives dans l’exposition Combien de temps faut-il pour qu’une voix atteigne l’autre? avec la Conservatrice en chef du MBAM, Mary-Dailey Desmarais. Veuillez noter que cette conférence ne sera pas diffusée en ligne – c’est un retour au présentiel! Elle aura lieu le mercredi 13 octobre de 17 h 30 à 19 h, dans l’Auditorium Maxwell Cummings. Finally, as some of you may know, I have been hired as Assistant Professor, Frameworks and Interventions in Studio Art Practices at Concordia University since September 2020. This year I am taking part in their fundraising activity, The Concordia Shuffle. This year, I joined the Faculty of Fine Arts Team to fundraise for the Indigenous Student Centre, Ostenhákta to create a $25 000.00 Student Success Fund. This fund will be administered by Indigenous staff for Indigenous students at Concordia. It will be used to help students attend conferences, put on exhibitions, and encourage them to reach their goals. Please see the following link to my Shuffle page for details and to donate.

Finalement, comme vous le saviez peut-être, j’enseigne à temps plein à l’Université Concordia depuis l’année passée en tant que professeur adjoint. Cette année je participe un levé de fonds « Concordia Shuffle », sur l’équipe du Faculté des beaux-arts. I hope the Spring equinox has you turning towards the sun for a little more light and warmth. Here are a few exhibitions and events, either ongoing or opening in both real life and online, that I would like to share:

Cadrer la nature

was extended over the winter and is now in its final weeks of its online life at the website of the Centre d’exposition de l’Université de Montréal. Catherine Barnabé conceived the exhibition as a virtual one from the start. She invited four contemporary female québecois artists, Janick Burn, myself, Ariane Plante and Ingrid Tremblay, to create artworks utilizing the lesser known side of Mont Royal (the side that overlooks the University de Montréal) in dialogue with an artwork of one of four lesser-known female québecois artists, selected by Barnabé from the Université de Montréal art collection. Cadrer la nature interweaves the various artworks and the curatorial text to create a poetic reflection on nature, landscape and the framing of these through a female lens.

Written on the Earth

recently opened at the McIntosh Gallery at Western University (London Ontario). This exhibition is produced in collaboration with the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP), a research group in the Faculty of Engineering at Western University. It’s a novel idea, which made for some very interesting art, and the Art Gallery of Ontario decided to feature it in their newsletter . The McIntosh Gallery is open by appointment and visits can be booked here.

C’est le printemps.

Avec l’espoir que l’équinoxe printanier éclaire et réchauffe un peu plus vos journées, je vous fais part de quelques expositions et évènements qui se passent en ce moment, soit virtuels, soit en présentiel :

Cadrer la nature

a été prolongée au cours de l’hiver et est maintenant dans ses dernières semaines sur le site web du Centre d'exposition de l'Université de Montréal. La commissaire Catherine Barnabé a d'emblée fait de Cadrer la nature une exposition virtuelle. Barnabé a jumelé quatre artistes québécoises contemporaines, Janick Burn, Ariane Plante, Ingrid Tremblay et moi-même, avec quatre œuvres d’artistes québécoises moins connues de la collection d’art de l'Université de Montréal. Elle nous a invitées à créer de nouvelles œuvres d'art en conversation avec ces œuvres existantes, en nous inspirant de la façade du mont Royal qui surplombe l'Université de Montréal. Cadrer la nature met en dialogue différentes œuvres d'art et leurs textes descriptifs pour créer une réflexion poétique sur la nature, le paysage et leur encadrement à travers une perspective féminine.

une nouvelle exposition collective à la McIntosh Gallery de l’université Western (London Ontario) a débuté le 4 mars. Cette exposition est produite en collaboration avec le Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP), un groupe de recherche qui fait partie de la Faculté de génie à l’université Western. C’est une idée novatrice qui a attiré l’équipe médiatique de la Art Gallery of Ontario, qui l’a promu dans leur envoi numérique (en anglais seulement). These are the final days (until November 7) to see some of my artworks currently in Toronto with Pierre François Ouellette Art contemporain (PFOAC) for the Art Toronto art fair. While the event is online this year, PFOAC has joined a pop-up gallery at Stephen Bulger Gallery so that the work can still be viewed live. The details for in-person viewing are here. There is a nice mention in this article of Canadian Art Online, along with other highlights of the art fair.

As well, I will be giving an online artist talk in the Conversations in Contemporary Art (CiCA) talk series at Concordia University Nov 12, 1:30 – 3pm. To change things up a bit, and in keeping with CiCA’s theme of “radical hospitality”, I have invited Peter Morin accompany me for this talk. We like to talk. The zoom link will be available here

2 – There a garage sale happening this weekend (Nov 7, 8; 10am – 5pm) at the old Bellechasse studio building – entrance: 6235 Avenue Henri-Julien, Montréal, QC. Je vais conclure cette missive avec deux annonces qui sont connectées à mon travail en tant qu’artiste:

1 - Il y a un levé de fonds pour le centre d’artistes autochtone daphne, un projet envisionné par Skawennati, Nadia Myre, Caroline Monnet et moi-même, avec Lori Beavis en tant que directrice. Des informations relatives à notre programmation en ligne et le site web viendront sous peu – l’argent ramassé par le levé de fonds servira à fournir notre espace physique qui viendra en 2121. Compte tenu du contexte actuel, c'est avec un réel plaisir que je vous partage de nouveaux projets qui ont récemment pris forme. Personne ne s'étonnera si les œuvres que je propose ce mois-ci ne se retrouvent pas dans les espaces habituels des galeries. Cependant, je salue la créativité sans relâche des commissaires et des programmateurs, qui arrivent à produire des événements et des expériences culturelles malgré les restrictions prolongées imposées par la pandémie.

En tant que commissaire en résidence au Centre d'exposition de l'Université de Montréal, Catherine Barnabé a d'emblée fait de Cadrer la nature une exposition virtuelle. Barnabé a invité quatre artistes québécoises contemporaines, Janick Burn, Ariane Plante, Ingrid Tremblay et moi-même, à créer des œuvres d'art en s'inspirant de la façade moins connue du Mont Royal (celle qui surplombe l'Université de Montréal) en prenant comme contexte l'œuvre de l'une des quatre artistes québécoises peu connues sélectionnées par Barnabé dans la collection de l'UdeM. Cadrer la nature met en dialogue différentes œuvres d'art et leur textes descriptifs pour créer une réflexion poétique sur la nature, le paysage et leur encadrement à travers une perspective féminine.

Je suis également l'une des artistes participant au programme d'exposition de Why Sentience ? ISEA2020 (Symposium international sur l'art électronique). Alors que les plans initiaux de la programmation en arts visuels ont subi des changements spectaculaires en raison de la pandémie, la présentation finale a donné lieu à un programme vidéo ambulant : VIDEO//PLAY, BREAK THE DISTANCE. Finalement, je participe à une causerie virtuelle le 14 octobre de 11h à midi: “Face à la crise de la commémoration en art public, quelles solutions envisager ?” Présentée par Culture Montréal, et modérée by Louise Déry, deux membres de la Commission permanente de l'art public, Analays Alvarez Hernandez and Marie-Blanche Fourcade, présenterons d’abord le document de synthèse du Forum International organisée en octobre 2019, “Entre tension et raison: l’art public à l’épreuve de la commémoration corrigée” produit par par cette l’organisation . Par la suite, Cécilia Bracmort et moi entamerons une discussion en tant qu’artistes qui s’engagent avec l’idée des espaces publiques et la mémoire dans nos pratiques artistiques respectives. La discussion est gratuite et ouverte à toutes.s. Par contre il faut s’inscrire.

Given the current state of affairs, I’m happy to have some new work and activities to share. It will come as no surprise that my art offerings this month are not in the usual gallery spaces. However, I applaud the exhibition curators and programmers who are continuously finding creative solutions to produce cultural events and experiences despite the ongoing restrictions imposed by the pandemic.

As curator-in-residence at the Centre d’exposition de l’Université de Montréal, Catherine Barnabé conceived Cadrer la nature as a virtual exhibition from the start. Barnabé invited four contemporary female québecois artists, Janick Burn, myself, Ariane Plante and Ingrid Tremblay to create artworks utilizing the lesser known side of Mont Royal (the side that overlooks the University de Montréal) in dialogue with an artwork of one of four little-known female québecois artists selected by Barnabé from the UdeM collection. Cadrer la nature interweaves the various artworks and the curatorial text to create a poetic reflection on nature, landscape and the framing of these through a female lens. I particularly want to thank Raphaëlle de Groot for her generosity in talking with me about this project, Raohseraha:wi Hemlock for the long hours given over to the technical animation of this video and Kanerahtenhá:wi Hilda Nicholas for the Kanien’kéha translation of the title of my work: iakoròn:ien’s [the sky falls around her].

I am also one of the artists participating in exhibition programme of Why Sentience? ISEA2020 (International Symposium on Electronic Art). While the original plans for the visual arts programming changed dramatically due to the pandemic, the final presentation has resulted in a moving video programme: VIDEO//PLAY, BREAK THE DISTANCE. From October 13th to the 18th, two trucks equipped with large LED screens will be in transit around the city showcasing the works of 13 national and international artists. **Only hints of the trucks’ locations will be disclosed (in order to dissuade large gatherings of spectators – pandemic rules!). Finally, as you may know, many Montreal artists have lost their long-time studios due to the rising real estate market in this city. A dozen of us leftover from our former studio building are working with an organization, Ateliers créatifs, whose mandate is to find and secure affordable studio spaces for artists. Ateliers Créatifs has managed to negotiate the rental of an empty floor in an industrial building. We now need to raise funds for the infrastructure costs (electricity, walls, plumbing, etc) to build the actual studio spaces. There is a gofundme page with a fundraiser art option – to which we have each donated 2 or 3 artworks. The gofundme / fundraiser finishes Sept 1st. If you are able to contribute, we thank you. Finalement, je participe à un effort collectif pour lever des fonds pour la construction de nouveaux ateliers. Comme vous le savez probablement, beaucoup d’artistes montréalais ont perdu leurs espaces de création à cause du marché immobilier et sa valeur croissante. Je fais partie d’un petit groupe qui travaille avec Ateliers créatifs, un organisme sans but lucratif qui cherche et crée des espaces d’ateliers aux prix abordables pour artistes. Ateliers créatifs a pu trouver un endroit, mais il faut toujours construire l’infrastructure (murs, électricité, plomberie, etc.). Pour nous aider à ce faire, nous avons lancé un gofundme avec une possibilité de procurer de l’art aussi. Cette levée de fonds terminera le 1er septembre. Si vous pouvez contribuer, nous vous remercions de tout cœur.

Je suis très heureuse de vous annoncer l’exposition collective à la Galerie d’art de Pierre-François Ouellette Art Contemporain (PFOAC), avec Bob Boyer, moi-même, Wally Dion et Dylan Miner. Cette exposition fait partie de la Biennale des arts contemporains autochtones (BACA): Kahwatsiretát: Teionkwariwaienna Tekariwaiennawahkòntie | Honorer nos affinités, toute en étant une exposition intégrale et cohérente en soi, programmée par le commissaire de la BACA, David Garneau. Elle examine des idées du territoire, les relations et le monde naturel. Vous pouvez trouver le texte de l’exposition ici. PFOAC est ouverte au public de 13h – 17h du mercredi au samedi, ou par rendez-vous. La galerie peut également faire des visites virtuelles par « zoom ».

Le visionnement de l’art par les expositions en ligne est également toujours possible. Une performance créée par Peter Morin et moi en 2017, pour Annie [nous voulons dessiner avec toi. nous dessinons avec toi], dans le cadre de notre exposition collaborative, il y a tant d’étoiles, est actuellement en ligne en tant que composante de la BACA 2020. Par ailleurs, l’exposition Reformatted se poursuit dans la galerie virtuelle d’AbTeC Island dans l’univers virtuel en ligne, Second Life. Pour « entrer » dans la galerie et la voir, il faut d’abord télécharger le logiciel de visionnement Second Life et créer un compte (gratuit) afin d’obtenir un avatar. After months of virtual gatherings and meetings, our physical and social worlds are starting to open back up, which now includes art galleries. I’m very pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition with Bob Boyer, myself, Wally Dion and Dylan Miner at the commercial gallery, Pierre-Francois Ouellette art contemporain (PFOAC). Curated by David Garneau, the exhibition is part of the larger Biennale des arts contemporains autochtones (BACA): Kahwatsiretátie: Teionkwariwaienna Tekariwaiennawahkòntie | Honoring Kinship, but is also an exhibition unto itself, exploring ideas of territory, relationship and the natural world. You may read David’s essay here. PFOAC is open to the public 1pm - 5pm, Wednesday to Saturday, or by appointment outside of those hours. The gallery will also do virtual visits through “zoom”.

Online exhibitions also continue to be viewable and “visitable”. The video performance, for Annie [we want to draw with you. we draw with you] by Peter Morin and myself, is posted to YouTube as a part of BACA2020 online. This artwork was created in 2017 as a part of our collaborative exhibition there are so many stars. As well, the exhibition Reformatted continues in the virtual gallery on AbTeC Island in Second Life. To visit AbTeC Island, you must first download the viewer software and create a [free] Second Life account to be assigned an avatar. Next, type “Abtec Island” in the “location” window and you will be teleported to the central gathering space, beside the Celestial Tree. From there you may walk, run or even (if you’re clever enough…) fly to the gallery.

Given that majority of galleries and public spaces are closed with the global pandemic, there is not a whole lot to report. However, there are still a few things going on, just in a different way…

First, I’d like to share a review of my exhibition trade | treaty | territory written by Hilarey Cowan for Canadian Art which recently finished at the Dunlop Art Gallery in Regina . The artworks from that exhibition are currently on hold in a Toronto art warehouse due to non-essential services restrictions. BUT some of them are still being featured in the Biennale d’art contemporain autochtone (BACA) 2020 : Kahwatsiretátie : Teionkwariwaienna Tekariwaiennawahkòntie | Honoring Kinship. The opening ceremony, and other videos relating to the Biennale may be viewed on the BACA Youtube channel . Eventually, once my artworks are liberated, they will be exhibited at Pierre François Ouellette Art Contemporain as a part of BACA. The various websites feature images and essays on the biennale thematic of kinship, written by the curator, David Garneau.

A truly original exhibition, Reformatted, is opening this Friday and it is an epic moment as it will be the first of its kind. The entire exhibition and the opening take place in the virtual world of Second Life on AbTeC Island. Apparently, sometime in the distant future (like, in the year 2121), the local museum will acquire my installation “cloudscape” and is featuring it in their exhibition on 21st Century Art. All are welcome to attend but must first create a [free] Second Life account . This will assign you an avatar. Then type “Abtec Island” in the “destination” window to be teleported to the gallery. Check it out!

As a last bit of news, the National Gallery of Canada Magazine recently interviewed me “Proustian” style and have published it online here

Étant donné les circonstances actuelles où les musées et galeries sont fermés, il n’y a pas beaucoup d’activités artistiques à vous communiquer, mais il y a quand même quelques nouvelles…

J’aimerais partager avec vous une critique écrite par Hilarey Cowan pour la revue Canadian Art de l’exposition trade | treaty | territory qui vient de finir récemment au Dunlop Art Gallery à Régina (en anglais seulement). Ces œuvres sont actuellement dans un entrepôt à Toronto, arrêtées en mi-transit des Prairies vers Montréal faute des restrictions pandémiques. Elles font néanmoins partie de la Biennale d’art contemporain autochtone (BACA) 2020: Teionkwariwaienna Tekariwaiennawahkòntie Honorer nos affinités. La cérémonie d’ouverture peut être visionnée sur youtube. Éventuellement, lorsque mes œuvres seront libérées de leur confinement, elles seront montées à la galerie Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain, nouveau partenaire du Biennale.

Une autre exposition, Reformatted, qui ouvre ce vendredi est novatrice - je suis certaine que c’est la première de son genre: l’exposition et le vernissage se trouve sur l’Île AbTeC (Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace) dans le monde virtuel de Second Life. Apparemment, dans un temps à venir (genre, l’année 2121), leur musée acquiert « cloudscape » et l’inclut dans leur exposition de l’art au 21e siècle. Pour faire partie de ce vernissage, il faut ouvrir un compte Second Life afin d’y accéder aux mondes virtuelles et pour obtenir un avatar. Ensuite tapez « Abtec Island » dans la fenêtre « destination » pour y être téléporté. C’est n’est pas compliqué et vraiment c’est très original. Venez vous joindre à nous et prendre un verre virtuel!

Et comme dernière petite nouvelle, j’ai participé au questionnaire style « Proust » avec la Revue en ligne du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada.

Veuillez noter qu’il y aura une présentation d’artiste à 18h le 17 janvier, lors du vernissage de l’exposition; il y aura également un atelier le samedi, 18 janvier de 11h - 14h à la bibliothèque Dunlop (pièce CA-1) : « Wampum Belts and Making Meaning » où nous allons tresser des bracelets perlés. L’atelier sera en anglais, sauf s’il y a des francophones qui aimeraient participer. L’atelier est présenté dans le cadre du festival « Story Tellers », en partenariat avec la Coopérative artistique Sâkêwêwak.

Please note, there will be an artist presentation at 6pm January 17 during the opening; there is also a workshop scheduled Saturday January 18, from 11 am – 2 pm. “Wampum Belts and Making Meaning” is a free workshop that will take place in the Dunlop Library, Central Adult section (CA-1). Participants will design and loom-weave a beaded bracelet.

The workshop is a part of Sâkêwêwak’s Story Tellers Festival; and is presented in partnership with Sâkêwêwak Artist Cooperative.
