October starts off with a few immediate activities: Inaabiwin opens at the Ottawa Art Gallery with an artist talk Thursday, October 3rd. I will then be participating in a portfolio day for Momenta, the Montreal 2019 biennale de l’image on Saturday October 5th. Finally, I will be back in Toronto for imagineNATIVE’s Art Crawl on October 24th with Skawennati, to talk with Ludovic Boney about his work at A-Space and about DAPHNE, a new Indigenous contemporary art space for Montreal (6 - 6:30pm) and then about my exhibition at YYZ Artist Outlet (6:30 - 7pm) -- both exhibitions are in the 401 Richmond Building.

In partnership with the Native Women’s Resource Centre, Red Embers is a summer-long public art project that honors Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls with 13 large scale banners mounted on cedar gates throughout Allan Gardens Park in downtown Toronto.

Le mois d’octobre débutera avec quelques activités : il y aura une présentation des artistes lors du vernissage d’Inaabiwin à la Galerie d’art d’Ottawa ce jeudi le 3 octobre. Ensuite, je participe à une journée de portfolios au Centre Phi pour Momenta, la biennale de l’image le samedi, 5 octobre. Finalement, je serai de nouveau à Toronto pour la tournée des arts du festival imagineNATIVE où moi et Skawennati y seront avec Ludovic Boney pour lui parler de son exposition à A-Space (18h – 18h30) et aussi de notre projet DAPHNE, une nouveau projet de centre d’artiste autochtone à Montréal; ensuite je présente ma propre exposition à YYZ (18h30 – 19h) – les deux expositions sont au 401 Richmond.

Shékon sewakwékon! Une nouvelle saison et de nouvelles activités débutent avec ce nouveau mois. Je serai à Toronto dans quelques semaines pour mon exposition individuelle au centre d’art YYZ, et travaille sur d’autres projets d’exposition dans cette ville aussi. Notamment, en tant qu’une des membres de DAPHNE, je contribue à l’organisation d’une exposition de l’artiste Wendat Ludovic Boney qui sera présenté à la galerie A-Space à Toronto du 24 septembre au 2 novembre. L’exposition est présentée en partenariat avec imagineNATIVE, un festival international de films et œuvres médiatiques autochtones. Nous cherchons toujours des bénévoles pour une des installations. Shékon sewakwékon! September is the beginning of a new season as well as new activities. I will be traveling to Toronto for my solo exhibition at YYZ, and have other projects happening there as well. Notably as one of the members of DAPHNE, I have been working on the exhibition Constructive Interference, a solo exhibition by Wendat artist Ludovic Boney which will be at A-Space Gallery in Toronto (September 24 – November 2) as a part of imagineNATIVE’s visual arts programming. We are still looking for volunteers to contribute time to help install one of the installations (September 16 - 19). If anyone is available and interested, please contact volunteer@imaginenative.org

The group exhibition, Inaabiwin, is currently at the Art Gallery of Mississauga. This touring exhibition, curated by Danielle Printup, explores Indigenous relationality with the natural world through the concept of inaabiwin, the Anishinaabemowin word for “movement of light”. Last year, Emily Falvey wrote a thoughtful response to the installation included in this exhibition, water song, when it was presented at the MAI (winter 2018) The review is accessible online through Esse magazine’s website. Inaabiwen was produced by the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa, Ontario.

Mon installation chant pour l’eau y figure, ainsi que les œuvres de Scott Benesiinaabandan, Tanya Lukin Linklater, Meryl McMaster et Greg Staats. En plus des informations habituelles reliées aux expositions, je voudrais porter à votre attention une initiative d’encans silencieux qui est en cours sur Facebook pour soutenir financièrement l’activiste, Ellen Gabriel. Ellen est survenue sur la scène nationale lors de la Crise d’Oka en 1990 en tant que porte-parole pour sa communauté de Kanehsatá:ke. Elle continue depuis de se battre pour les droits autochtones, les droits des femmes et des communautés autochtones, et l’environnement. Actuellement elle est atteinte d’un cancer. Plusieurs de sa communauté et de la communauté artistique nationale se sont mis ensemble pour la soutenir par l’entremise de cet encans. Vous y trouverez des contributions de Jordan Bennett, moi-même, Christi Belcourt, Carla Hemlock, Kent Monkman, Nadia Myre, Skawennati, et plusieurs autres. L’encans continuera jusqu’au 30 juin. Treize bannières rouges à grande échelle conçues par des artistes seront suspendues sur des poutres massives en cèdre au Parc Allan Garden pour l’été. L’exposition ouvrira le 8 juin à 11h00 avec une cérémonie publique. Tous sont le bienvenu!

Along with the usual exhibition information, I want highlight an online art auction initiative for Ellen Gabriel that is currently underway through Facebook. Ellen was first thrown into the national spotlight as the spokesperson for her community of Kanehsatá:ke during the Oka Crisis in 1990 and has remained an engaged activist and spokesperson for Indigenous issues, women, community and the environment. She is currently battling cancer, and many from her local community and larger artistic community have come together to financial support her through this art auction. The auction includes artworks by Jordan Bennett, myself, Christi Belcourt, Carla Hemlock, Kent Monkman, Nadia Myre, Skawennati, and many others. It continues until June 30. All proceeds will go to her and her family. There is also an option to give directly as well, through a gofundme online fundraiser . Niawenkò:wa sewakwekón!

Avec différents projets qui terminent et qui se poursuivent, je voulais partager avec vous un peu des activités qui sont en cours...

Mercredi le 24 avril à 18h, je participe à une table ronde au Musée McCord, intitulée, Donner vie : Les pratiques artistiques traditionnelles autochtones dans les musées. Animée par Kwiaahwah Jones, la commissaire invitée pour le volet contemporain de l’exposition Sding K’awXangs – Haïda : Histoires surnaturelles, la discussion abordera des questions de l’art, le musée et les communautés autochtones. Les participants sont Ariane Medley et John Brent Bennet, artistes haïdas qui ont des oeuvres dans l’exposition, et moi en tant qu’artiste en résidence au Musée.

Mon exposition au Musée McCord c’est pas pour rien qu’on s’est rencontré, est ouverte depuis le 7 mars et continue jusqu’au 11 août. Dans cette vidéo produite par le musée, je présente les idées qui informent ma démarche et les oeuvres créées pour l’exposition.

Mon exposition individuelle, animations, qui fait partie du Biennale du Québec: Manif d’art 9 – Si petits entre les étoiles, si grands contre le ciel au Musée Huron-Wendat à Wendake est dans ses derniers jours. L’exposition termine ce dimanche, le 21 avril. La salle d’exposition est ouverte du mercredi-vendredi de 15h – 18h et la fin de semaine de 10h-12h et 13h-16h. L’exposition au Musée d’art de Joliette, De tabac et de foin d’odeur. Là où sont nos rêves est maintenant dans ses dernières semaines. Bien que l’exposition terminera le 5 mai, le 28 avril, il y aura une dernière célébration au musée. Le commissaire Guy Sioui Durand fera une visite commentée de son exposition et il y aura deux performances: une par Éruoma Awashish et Sarah Cleary, et l’autre par Catherine Boivin et Terry Randy Awashish.

 Cette exposition est organisée en partenariat avec le Collectif des commissaires autochtones. Elle est réalisée grâce au soutien financier de la bourse Nouveau Chapitre du Conseil des arts du Canada, en collaboration avec l’Office national du film du Canada et aussi en partenariat avec le Centre culturel autochtone de Lanaudière.

I am participating in a round table discussion Wednesday April 24 at 6PM at the McCord Museum, titled, Bringing to Life: Traditional Indigenous Art Practice in the Museum . Moderated by Kwiaahwah Jones, the curator of the contemporary component of SDING K’AWXANGS – Haida: Supernatural Stories, the round table discussion will address questions of art, museums and community… I will be speaking as artist-in-residence at the McCorid, alongside Haida artists, Ariane Medley and John Brent Bennett who both have artworks in the new exhibition. 

My exhibition, there’s a reason for our connection, opened at the McCord Museum March 7 and continues until August 11. Of Tobacco and Sweetgrass: Where Our Dreams Are is in its last weeks at the Musée d’art de Joliette. While the exhibition continues until May 5, there is final celebration happening April 28, from 2 - 5 PM that includes a presentation of the exhibition by guest curator, Guy Sioui Durand, and performances by Éruoma Awashish and Sarah Cleary, as well as Catherine Boivin and Terry Randy Awashish. Labrador tea and bannock will be served.  This free event is open to all!

The exhibition is presented in partnership with the Aboriginal Curatorial Collective as a part of the Tiohtià:ke Project through the Canada Council’s New Chapters fund, as well as with the collaboration of the National Film Board of Canada and in partnership with the Centre culturel autochtone de Lanaudière.

The public reception for Inaabiwin [movement of light] at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa is happening this Friday November 2, 7-10pm. There will be a walk-through presentation of the exhibition by the curator Danielle Printup, myself and possibly other artists (to be confirmed). The exhibition features artworks by Scott Benesiinaabandan, myself, Tanya Lukin-Linklater, Meryl McMaster and Greg Staats. Also included in the exhibition, is a written response to the artworks by Billy-Ray Belcourt. It is only a short GO Train ride away if you would like to come on out!

Now that the cool days of autumn are upon us, I’m very happy to announce that my public art commission for Queens University in Kingston Ontario has been completed and installed. If you are in the area, there is a public “unveiling” ceremony planned for Friday Sept 28 at 12:30.

I was also working on another public art proposal, which can be seen in the exhibition, Reimagining Place: The Hart House Centennial Commission, September 5 – October 27 at the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Toronto. It is an exhibition of solicited proposals for a permanent artwork at the University of Toronto’s Hart House. I am extremely honoured to be included among those invited to participate: Rebecca Belmore and Osvaldo Yero (RBOY inc.), Faye HeavyShield, Ursula Johnson in collaboration with Maria Hupfield, Amy Malbeuf, Nadia Myre, Tannis Nielsen, Shelley Niro, Travis Shilling.

Another wonderful bit of news that happened this summer, is that my suspended installation, our minds are one, is now a part of the collection of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. I’m very happy and thankful that this work now has a home where the public will be able to see it.

One last thing I want to mention, is the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s fundraiser for arts programming to benefit inner city youth which is October 13. I have donated the vamps I created for Walking With Our Sisters, the collective art installation to honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women that toured many communities across Canada these last 5 years. I thought it would be an appropriate cause that this artwork could potentially benefit.

Une autre nouvelle à partager est que j’ai l’immense plaisir de vous annoncer que mon installation suspendue our minds are one fait maintenant partie de la collection du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada. Je suis très heureuse que cette œuvre sera dorénavant accessible au grand public.

Finalement, si vous êtes à Winnipeg, je voulais vous signaler le levé de fonds de la Galerie d’art de Winnipeg (WAG), qui aura lieu le 13 octobre. Les fonds seront utilisés pour financer leur programme d’art pour les jeunes de la ville. J’ai contribué les hauts de mocassins que j’avais fait pour Walking With Our Sisters, l’installation d’art collective itinérante pour honorer les Femmes Autochtones Disparues ou Assassinées. Maintenant que ce projet est terminé, je trouvais que le levé de fonds du WAG était une belle cause qui arrimait avec mes intentions pour cette œuvre.

La semaine prochaine, l’exposition collective, Disparues et oubliées, ouvre au Musée de la civilisation à Québec. Cette exposition, la version originale étant produite en 2015 par Ondinnok avec la commissaire Syvie Paré, aborde le sujet de la crise des femmes autochtones disparues et assassinées. La version itinérante actuelle de l’exposition est une co-production avec la Boîte rouge vif.

Le projet Résilience

... un projet initié par Mentoring Artists' for Women's Art ( MAWA ) pour le 150e anniversaire du Canada et avec une bourse Nouvelles chapitres du Conseil des arts du Canada. Ceci mettra en lumière le travail de 50 femmes artistes autochtones sur des panneaux publicitaires dans les villes et au long des autoroutes, à travers le pays. Je me sens très honorée de me compter parmi cette liste d’artistes. Le projet-même débutera en juin 2018, mais vous pouvez lire le texte de la commissaire Lee-Ann Martin et retrouvez les participantes et leurs œuvres sur le Site Web, ainsi qu’une carte indiquant les divers emplacements des panneaux publicitaires.

Disparues et oubliées opens at the Musée de la civilisation in Québec City next week. Information follows below. This is a beautiful and thoughtful group exhibition based on the ongoing crisis in this country of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. Originally produced by Ondinnok in 2015 with the curator Sylvie Paré, the touring version of the exhibition has been co-produced by la Boîte rouge vif. This will be the final stop of this tour.

The Resilience Project

A Canada 150 / New Chapters project initiated by MAWA (Mentoring Artists for Women Artists) and curated by Lee-Ann Martin, Resilience will display the work of 50 Indigenous women artists on billboards across the country throughout the summer. I’m very honoured to be a part of this. The project will launch in June 2018, however the website is now live. On it, you can see the artists who are participating and their artwork, a curatorial essay by Lee-Ann Martin, as well as a map with the many billboard locations.

In this time of winter… it is a time of making things, of reflection, of bringing together, of consideration. I want to say a big niawen'kó:wa to Ellen Gabriel, Skawennati, Camille Larivée and Nadine St Louis for their generosity and their words at the round table we produced for the Conseil des arts de Montréal January 30. Niawen'kó:wa as well to Nicole O’bomsawin for the blanket exercise she conducted that same day. All of these are means of shaking off the dust and renewing our resolve.

I also want to say a huge thank you to Artspace artistic director, Jon Lockyer, for his vision in bringing together the beautiful publication Artspace produced on my work; to Erin Sutherland for her intro; and to Naomi Johnson for the wonderful text. À ce temps d’hiver… c’est le temps de fabriquer, de réfléchir, de rassembler et de considérer. Je veux dire un grand niawen'kó:wa à Ellen Gabriel, Skawennati, Camille Larivée et Nadine St Louis pour leur généreuse participation à la table ronde que nous avons produite pour le Conseil des arts de Montréal. Niawen'kó:wa aussi à Nicole O’bomsawin de diriger l’exercice de la couverture lors de cet même évènement. Toutes ces activités sont nous permettent d’enlever la poussière et de se renouveler.

Je veux aussi dire un grand merci à Jon Lockyer, directeur artistique de Artspace pour sa vision dans la production de la publication sur mon œuvre. Je suis reconnaissante aussi à Erin Sutherland pour l’introduction et à Naomi Johnson pour son texte critique. The works in this exhibition originated from conversations with Elders Jerry Saddleback and John Janvier, as well as Tsi Ronterihwanónhnha ne Kanien'kéha Language and Cultural Center in Kanehsatá:ke, QC. Niawenkó:wa to AbTeC for the opportunities provided by my time in residence with Milieux at Concordia University, as well as Hilda Nicholas, Ellen Gabriel, Scott Benesiinaabandan and Skawennati for their contributions to the growth of this project. The research and creation of these works was made possible through the financial support of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Conseil des arts de Montréal.

The exhibition will include a new catalogue on my work produced by Artspace with a foreword / introduction by Dr. Erin Sutherland and a critical text by Naomi Johnson.

Akohserà:ke ta:we! Winter is coming! L’hiver arrive!

While no new exhibitions open in December, for those of you in Montreal, I will be giving an artist talk on Saturday December 16 at 3pm for the closing of there are so many stars at OBORO. If you would like to know more about the artworks and collaborative process of this exhibition, this will be the perfect occasion! I am including some extra images with the exhibition information below (please scroll the images to view the slideshow). However, as activities are winding down for 2017, I wish you all a well-deserved break over the holidays with family and friends. All the best in the new year!

 Bien qu’il n’y aie pas de nouvelles expositions à annoncer ce mois-ci, pour ceux qui seront à Montréal, vous seriez peut-être intéressés par l’événement de finissage de l’exposition, il y a tant d’étoiles à OBORO : je vais faire une présentation d’artiste le 16 décembre à 15h00. Ça sera l’occasion de connaître plus sur ce projet, si ça vous tente! J’inclus quelques images supplémentaires avec les informations d’exposition ci-bas (veuillez avancez les images pour voir le diaporama). In this exhibition, Claus engages with the Hochelaga Rock, the historical marker located on the McGill campus, to underscore the fluidity of Indigenous knowledge and time, and the constraints imposed upon this understanding by Western structures of chronology and record.

This solo exhibition features new work created during my time as artist-in-residence at AbTeC (Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace) through Milieux at Concordia University. I would like to thank Nicole O’Bomsawin, Babe and Carla Hemlock, Nadine St-Louis and Ellen Gabriel for their assistance in my research to create this video.

The video projection for this exhibition was produced during my residency at AbTeC (Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace). all of this was once covered in water considers the idea of water and memory, linking these to the cosmos as « passage and vehicle that communicate the indescribable and connect us to the world» (Bachand, Éléments).

Éléments is a part of the multiple exhibition project of Accès culture for the 375th Anniversary of the City of Montréal: Un million d'horizons (1x19=1 000 000).

Walking With Our Sisters

In 2013, I contributed a pair of vamps (beaded moccasin tops) to this collective grassroots exhibition initiated by Métis artist Christi Belcourt in which over 1800 pairs of vamps were created by individuals to honour missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, and the children who died in residential schools. It will only be here a week; it will be the same weekend as the Kahnawà:ke pow wow.

The artworks will be on display in various homes and businesses on Kent and Appleton Avenues from June 28 to July 2. As a special component this week’s edition of les Fenêtres qui parlent includes 10 invited artists from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The organizers would like to thank Mme Pierrette Lapointe-Normandeau and M. André Normandeau for hosting the opening on their property; M. Normand Hudon, owner of the Wilderton Metro grocery store and the bakery Les Co’Pains d’abord for their contributions to the event.

Walking With Our Sisters

5 au 12 juillet

En 2013, j’ai fait une paire de dessus perlés de moccasins pour ce projet collectif initié par l’artiste Métis Christi Belcourt. Plus de 1800 dessus de mocassins ont été créés par des individus pour honorer les femmes et filles autochtones assassinées et disparues, et aussi les enfants qui sont décédés dans les écoles résidentielles. L’exposition ne sera à Kahnawà:ke que pendant une semaine et aura lieu la même fin de semaine que le pow-wow.

je me souviens, les Fenêtres qui parlent

WEEK 8: Côte-des-neiges /Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Montréal

Vernissage: Vendredi 30 juin, à 17 h 30 au 3150, avenue de Kent

Les oeuvres seront montées dans les demeures à différentes adresses sur les avenues Kent et Appleton du 28 juin au 2 juillet. Un composant novateur de cette semaine-ci: il y aura des oeuvres d’une dizaine d’artistes du Sao Paulo au Brésil qui s’ajoutent aux artistes montréalais.

Les organisateurs tiennent à remercier madame Pierrette Lapointe-Normandeau et monsieur André Normandeau d’accueillir sur leur terrain le vernissage de l’exposition. Ils remercient également monsieur Normand Hudon, le propriétaire de l’épicerie Metro Wilderton, et la boulangerie Les Co’Pains d’abord pour leurs contributions au vernissage.

Musée des Abénakis, Odanak, QC

Pendant une résidence de création en 2013, les artistes s’engageaient avec les communautés mi’kmaqs de Gesgapégiaq et Listuguj, ainsi que les résidents québecois et acadiens de la ville de Carleton-sur-mer, pour créer de nouvelles œuvres résultant de ces échanges. Ce projet a été organisé par la commissaire indépendante France Trépanier en partenariat avec le centre d’artistes Vaste et vague à Carleton-sur-mer, Québec. Guy Sioui Durand et Caroline Loncol-Daignault y étaient aussi, en tant qu’auteurs-observateurs, pour contribuer à une future publication sur le projet.

J'aimerais remercier Daphne Boyer de bien vouloir m'aider avec l'installation ugstakamuid. Aussi Lucy Hotchkiss pour le don de la pièce mécanique manquante pour mon outil... Nia:wen!

Musée des Abénakis, Odanak, QC

During an artistic residency in 2013, the artists engaged with the Mi'kmaq communities of Gesgepegiaq and Listuguj, as well as the Québecois and Acadian communities of Carleton-sur-mer to create new artworks out of collaborative exchange. The project was initiated by independent curator France Trépanier in partnership with Vaste et vague artist-run centre in Carleton-sur-mer, Québec. Guy Sioui-Durand and Caroline Loncol-Daigneault also participated as writers-observers for a future publication on the residency-exhibition.

I would like to particularly thank Daphne Boyer for her willingness to assistant in installing ugstakamuid with me.  And also Lucy Hotchkiss for providing the missing component needed for my tool... Nia:wen!

The video projection for this exhibition was produced during my residency at AbTeC (Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace). all of this was once covered in water considers the idea of water and memory, linking these to the cosmos as « passage and vehicle that communicate the indescribable and connect us to the world» (Bachand, Éléments).

Éléments is a part of the multiple exhibition project of Accès culture for the 375th Anniversary of the City of Montréal: Un million d'horizons (1x19=1 000 000).
